The boiling suppression of liquid nitrogen

چکیده

When He gas is injected from room temperature into boiling liquid N2, boiling is suppressed, leaving liquid surface flat like a mirror. Although the qualitative explanation for this phenomenon is known [Minkoff G J et al. Nature 1957;180(4599):14134.], it has not been studied quantitatively and comprehensively yet. In this report, we made careful simultaneous measurements of temperature and weight variation of the liquid. The results clearly indicate that the boiling suppression is caused by cooling of the liquid with “internal evaporation” of N2 into the He bubbles.

Detecting sound wave of bubbles produced in a boiling liquid

This experiment attempted to detect the sound wave produced by bubbles in boiling water and liquid nitrogen as an application for LUX, large underground xenon, which is expected to detect weakly interacting massive particles, WIMPs. Currently, there are still several steps needed to be done in order to detect the bubble waveform. Before proceeding any further, it is necessary to change the curr...

Electrical Control and Enhancement of Film Boiling

Boiling heat transfer rates impact the performance of various processes like quenching, steam generation, desalination, and boiling water reactors. The film boiling regime of the boiling curve has very low heat transfer rates around the Leidenfrost point which corresponds to the formation of a stable and continuous vapor layer at the solid-liquid interface (Leidenfrost effect). This insulating ...

Determination of heat transfer coefficients in plastic French straws plunged in liquid nitrogen.

The knowledge of the thermodynamic process during the cooling of reproductive biological systems is important to assess and optimize the cryopreservation procedures. The time-temperature curve of a sample immersed in liquid nitrogen enables the calculation of cooling rates and helps to determine whether it is vitrified or undergoes phase change transition. When dealing with cryogenic liquids, t...

Heat Transfer Efficiency of Turbulent Film Boiling on a Horizontal Elliptical Tube with External Flowing Liquid

Film boiling on a horizontal elliptical tube immersed in external flowing nitrogen liquid is investigated in the present paper. The isothermal wall temperature is high enough to induce turbulent film boiling, and then a continuous vapor film runs upward over the surface. The high velocity of the flowing saturated liquid at the boundary layer is determined by potential flow theory. In addition, ...

Comparison of heat transfer in liquid and slush nitrogen by numerical simulation of cooling rates for French straws used for sperm cryopreservation.

Slush nitrogen (SN(2)) is a mixture of solid nitrogen and liquid nitrogen, with an average temperature of -207 °C. To investigate whether plunging a French plastic straw (commonly used for sperm cryopreservation) in SN(2) substantially increases cooling rates with respect to liquid nitrogen (LN(2)), a numerical simulation of the heat conduction equation with convective boundary condition was us...
